Nicholas is a minor character in Rule of Rose.
He is a member of the of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club and in the bourgeoise class.
Appearance[]
Nicolas is a pale boy with blonde hair and hazel-like eyes. True to his nickname, he is constantly shown covered in dirt. His clothes are a white shirt with brown stains, black overalls with long leggings, brown tied-up shoes, and a brown checkered cap.
Personality[]
Nicholas can be viewed as strange, as he is seen standing in the hallway shouting "I'm a shadow, I'm a shadow!" His best friend is Xavier and can usually be found sword fighting with him in a playful fashion. He is apparently very mischievous, as him and Xavier were known for playing pranks, and frightening the girls at the orphanage. Nicholas appears very sloppy, hence his title as "The Sloppy Prince."
Rule of Rose[]
In the airship, he is always either in the Turbines area or down the hall from the filth room. In the Rose Garden Orphanage, he can be found before the front door with Xavier.
He first officially appears in the "Unlucky Clover Field" chapter peeking near a wall. Talking to him has him demand Jennifer go away and that "he's a shadow." This is a hint that the next key is hidden at his shadow. Once it's picked up, Nicholas immediately runs away.
The next time he appears is him swordfighting with Xavier during "Sir Peter." If Jennifer attempts to interact with them, they will promptly stop and give her the silent treatment. If she looks away, they will start fighting again.
During the "Goat Sisters" chapter, Meg walks past Nicholas. He can be seen hitting a bag with his sword. If Jennifer talks to him, he will wonder where Meg is heading. Later, Nicholas drops a filthy object into the Onion Bag. Said object is specifically a living frog.
In “Raw Princess Sews,” Nicholas comments on the power outage. He is shown to be annoyed at Xavier and wonders what he did to cause it. Nicholas is also seen in the aristocrat club meeting. He watches Jennifer be awarded a crayon and leaves.
Later on, he gives Jennifer the silent treatment during "The Funeral" chapter. He can also be seen assigned chores by Hoffman and dueling with Xavier. Like the other aristocrat members, Nicholas was murdered by Gregory M. Wilson during the orphanage massacre.

Xavier[]
Xavier is Nicholas’ best friend. The duo constantly participate in sword-fighting together. They are also typically together during aristocrat meetings and also are together during the Onion Bag punishment. Even so, Nicholas can occasionally be annoyed with Xavier such as when he caused the power outage.
Etymology[]
The meaning of the name, Nicholas is "people of victory." It comes from the Greek words ‘nike’ and ‘laos.’ This could refer to his victories in the pretend sword-fights that he and Xavier had.
